Just after midnight, hundreds of people took to the streets throughout Washington, D.C., and across the country, to voice their outrage over the ‘not guilty’ verdict handed down in the trial of George Zimmerman. Zimmerman had been facing Second Degree Murder charges for the shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in Sanford, FL.
Protesters shut down the intersection of 14th and U Street NW before dispersing to various locations throughout the city – including Adams Morgan, the White House, and Columbia Heights. I followed 60+ demonstrators through the streets of Columbia Heights, escorted by dozens of police.
Chants of “no justice, no peace” and “Trayvon was murdered” echoed through the streets while people took turns voicing their own personal perspectives via bullhorns. The following photographs were taken in Columbia Heights around 1AM.
